Healthy pear rice pudding that your baby will love

Whether you want to give this as a breakfast or dessert, this pear rice pudding has been loved by my baby and so I wanted to share the recipe with you. This is an Ella’s Kitchen recipe and can be found in the weaning book.

My son is now 8 months, and I am trying to get him used to lumps in his food. So a recipe like this which has lumps in with the rice but aren’t big or tough is perfect for the stage he is at right now. The flavour is actually delicious, so next time I’d make it with whole milk instead of formula so I can get in on the action too! Here’s how I made it and the ingredients you’ll need.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe pear
  • 7oz baby formula (this is where next time I’d swap this in for whole milk to try it)
  • A pinch of mixed spice
  • 25g of risotto rice

How to make the baby pudding

Step 1: Measure out the rice and add the baby formula to it into a pan. Bring to the boil and then let it simmer for 15 minutes with the lid on. Stir intermittently.

Step 2: Peel, core and chop up the pear into small pieces.

Step 3: After 15 minutes add the pear and pinch of mixed spice into the pan with the rice and milk. Give it a good stir and put the lid back on for another 15 minutes. At this stage if it is looking like the mixture is quite thick then you can add some boiling water to it. Stir regularly to ensure the rice isn’t sticking to the bottom.

Step 4: Depending on your babies age you can either mash (with a masher or back of a fork), or blend in the blender or hand blender for a smoother texture. As my son is 8 months I want him to be getting used to the lumpier foods so I just mashed it up.

Step 5: Make sure it is nice and cool before serving it to your little one.

Step 6: You can freeze the mixture. I put mine into little silicone ice trays I bought online from Amazon here. That way it will last longer without needing to give it to your little one so they won’t get bored of it. With the silicone ice trays they are really easy to get out individually also so you can take 2-3 out for example and leave the rest for another day and these ones also have lids, to keep the food nice and fresh. Ideally for parents, they are also dishwasher friendly!

Hope your baby enjoys the pudding! Sorry the pudding in the photos doesn’t look overly appetising but I promise you it tastes way better than it looks!
