One of the largest turnovers of plastic in our household comes from the bathroom. Shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, face wash and bath soap to name just a few are the main culprits.
So over the past few weeks I’ve been looking at ways to change some of these items up to reduce our plastic consumption. One product I came across was the Beauty Kubes shampoo which I had to give a try as I saw it was highly rated amongst the sustainable community. I found a box of the shampoo at my local eco shop, The Refill Pantry in St Albans and from there I haven’t looked back!
Shampoo without the plastic & harmful chemicals
Most shampoos on the market are made up of a list full of chemicals and packaged up in plastic. Finding the Beauty Kubes was so refreshing. Packaged up in a simple box, they pride themselves on being:
- Plastic free
- Sulphate free
- 64% of organic ingredients
- Vegan friendly
- Palm oil free
- Cruelty free
- Silicone free
Having had scalp problems in the past, I know how important choosing good hair products is for you. Beauty Kubes know the importance of their ingredients making sure they are gentle, biodegradable cleansing agents that give the shine and bounce back to our hair.
What’s in the Beauty Kubes shampoo?
These Kubes are infused with vegan ingredients – and let me tell you they smell AMAZING! You get hints of rose blended in with all the other essential oils. In the shampoo for normal to dry hair the ingredients consist of:
- Natural rose extract
- Coconut milk
- Pro vitamin B5
- Vitamin E
- Meadowfoam seed oil
- Blend of organic palmarosa, orange and grapefruit essential oils
Due to the natural formula in the shampoo kubes, the shelf life is much shorter at 6 months. But for me that doesn’t affect me as I use the shampoo up within 2 months of purchasing it (depending on how much or how little I wash my hair in that given month!)
The perfect travel companion
When you’re on the go, whether travelling, on business or just visiting friends for the weekend, we know how much space in our bags can be an issue! I believe these Beauty Kubes offer the perfect solution and are such a good travel companion going forward.
You only need to use 1 cube per hair wash (or if you have very thick and long hair you may need two – it’s worth experimenting depending on your hair type). The cubes are cutely packaged into the box with 27 shampoo Kubes that provide enough lather for 1 wash. So if like me you only need one per wash, you’ve got yourself 27 washes.
How do the shampoo Kubes work?
Take a kube out of the box and into the shower or bath with you. You don’t want to leave the packaging near water though as the box would go all soggy and the kubes would disintegrate, so keep on a shelf in your bathroom for easy access.
- Simply crush the shampoo Kube in your hand, add a little water and rub together to make a thick paste. At this point I was questioning whether this was going to work on the first time of using, but stick with it.
- Put the paste onto your wet hair and work it into the hair as you would with normal shampoo.
- What you’ll find is as you rub the shampoo paste in, it lathers up into a foam. Rinse off as you normally would and dry/style your hair as usual.
What’s it like to use?
The outcome… my hair felt light, soft and bouncy! I honestly couldn’t believe it. It’s that feeling after you’ve gone to a hair salon where your hair just feels so nice and squeaky clean. But all from just one little Beauty Kube.
A little more about Beauty Kubes
A child company of the popular Eve of St. Agnes, Beauty Kubes was set up with a mission to reduce plastic and waste consumption within the hair and beauty industry. What a goal to set themselves!
They identified that in the UK alone, 16 million bottles every day are not recycled and end up in landfill. Most of these plastic bottles we use for our shampoo and conditioners etc are made in China and shipped over. So they have already travelled nearly a third the way around the world before they get to the UK! What’s more, each plastic bottle is packaged in an individual plastic bag to protect it on its journey. This is something I did not know, and quite shocked to hear to be honest!
So in a bid to help the environment and create a great new UK product, Beauty Kubes set up a facility in Cornwall to hand-make the Beauty Kubes, with the help of some specialised equipment. What is great is Beauty Kubes are living and breathing their original goal, with solar and wind turbines to function their facility.
Would you buy Beauty Kubes again?
Well, this is truly a swap I’m happy with and I’m so glad I have found this Beauty Kube company. They sit perfectly with what I am trying to achieve as a mum and changing my families stance on plastic, alongside offering a great product that I’d be happy to use on my son too (once he has some hair haha!). Boxes retail for £9.50 for the one I bought and you can find at stockists such as eco/refill shops near you or take a look at their website for more details.
